Electron Volt is the unit of ?
Electron Volt (eV)
Electron Volt is the unit of Energy
One electron volt is the energy gained by an electron, when it is accelerated through a potential difference of 1 volt.
Relation between electron volt(eV) and joule(J)
We know that….
Electric Potential = Work Done / charge
⇒ Work Done = Electric Potential × charge
1 eV = 1 V × 1.602 × 10-19 C
⇒ 1 eV = 1.602 × 10-19 J
Also note that….
1 Mega eV = 106 eV = 106 × 1.602 × 10-19 J
⇒ 1 MeV = 1.602 × 10-13 J
Relation between a.m.u. and MeV
From Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence, E = mc2
Taking “m” as 1 a.m.u.(=1.66×10-27Kg) and c = 3×108m/s
We have, E = (1.66×10-27) × (3×108)2 J
⇒ E = 1.49×10-10 J
Now as 1 MeV = 1.602 × 10-13 J
So….
E = (1.49×10-10)÷(1.602×10-13) MeV = 931.25 MeV
⇒ 1 a.m.u. ≈ 931 MeV
