Introduction to Nuclear Physics
Nuclear Physics :- In the year 1911, Rutherford discovered(by his α-particle scattering experiment on thin gold foils) that, in every atom, the positive charge and mass are densely concentrated at the center of the atom called “nucleus“.
Rutherford established that mass of the nucleus is more than 99.9% of the mass of the atom and size of the atom and nucleus are of the order of 10-10 m and 10-15 m respectively. This means, most of the space around the nucleus of an atom is empty space.
In nuclear physics, we will study about the constituents of the nucleus, its size, mass, density and stability. We will also study about radioactivity, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.
